64-gun 3rd rate ship-of-the-line

  • Launched in 1768
  • Broken up in 1815
  • Nelson's first ship.  He was a Midshipman in her from January to May 1771 serving under his uncle, Capt. Maurice Suckling.
Presence at Nelson's Battles:

Career:

  • 1770: Commissioned in under Capt. Maurice Suckling due to the imminent war with Spain. 
  • January 1771: Nelson, aged 12, joined after seeing Suckling's appointment and begging his uncle to take him.
  • 1776-80: with the North American station during the American Revolutionary War.
  • 2nd April 1801: At the Battle of Copenhagen, but as she was in Admiral Hyde Parker's division, she did not see action.  (Capt. John Dilkes)
  • 1803: with the Channel Fleet under Admiral Cornwallis, blockading Brest.
  • 22nd July 1805: Fought at the Battle of Cape Finisterre (Capt. Josias Rowley)
  • 1805: with Comm. Sir Home Riggs Popham's squadron during the campaign to take Cape Town from the Dutch.
